In Other News: Haiti Relief Hits Close to Home

If you're wondering why Deacon's been quiet the past few days, it's because we've been in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home of the famed 82nd Airborne. Friends close to our heart (Including our own M) are deploying to Haiti to aid in the relief efforts. Enjoy this video, from a local North Carolina news affiliate - it features Lieutenant Fred Lough, a West Point graduate and colleague of M. He hails from Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Despite the fact that our updates most often focus on all that is fashion, food and fun in the District and beyond, Deacon hopes that you'll take some time over the next few weeks to remember not only all of those that lost their lives and their homes in this horrible tragedy, but also the men and women of our armed forces and relief efforts who are taking time away from their own families and loved ones to help those in need. The deployment may not be to a combat zone such as Iraq or Afghanistan, but the pain of leaving family members behind and having little contact or the creature comforts from home is still very real.

We'll continue to use this space for occasional updates. If you feel compelled to donate to the Haitian relief efforts or aid groups for soldiers stationed abroad, here are a few of our favorite charities, listed below:
  • American Red Cross - the best way to get your donations directly to Haitian victims of the recent earthquake
  • Combat Ready Balm - buy one of these locally-produced and eco-friendly balms for yourself. The salve helps cure most all dry skin problems as well as soothes bug bites and minor irritations. For each balm purchased, another is donated to a soldier in need - or you can donate directly to a loved one.
  • Luke's Wings - funds raised help pay for hotel stays and airfare for family members of wounded soldiers when visiting loved ones recovering at area hospitals
