Say Yum: Who You Callin' Chicken?

Friday afternoon saw an unexpected opportunity to try the new South African hot spot, Nando’s Peri Peri. It’s the global chain’s first U.S. output, right in the middle of Penn Quarter, about a block north of the Verizon Center. Suffice to say, it was the classiest quick casual place I’ve ever seen — hardwood floors, brick walls, and cozy booths. The menu is simple (it’s a chicken joint, after all) but isn’t that the point? For under $10, you can snag a half chicken and three sides (try the squash with grilled corn and onions) seasoned anywhere from mild to hot-hot-hot. I hate to sound like I’m exaggerating, but it’s quite possibly the best chicken breast I’ve ever had … certainly the best breast under $10.

819 Seventh St. NW, Penn Quarter; 202.898.1225.
