In Case You Missed It: District Sample Sale Recap (Guest Post!)

Thanks to Real Girl Runway's Deb Vaughan for this great guest post while we're in France! Want more? Check out her great pics in this slideshow.

{Committee Member Erika Martin-Hughes with co-founder and Real Housewife Mary Amons}

Outsiders may think Washington, DC is all suits and startched shirts but last night, DC’s fashion forward proved them wrong. Attendees to the biannual District Sample Sale wore their most stylish ensembles to one of the premier fashion events of the season. With over 30 fashion vendors and boutiques to choose from, there was something for everyone.

What’s New for 2011

The big news on everyone’s lips? A new location -- the sale moved from Georgetown to the Vornado/Charles E. Smith Green Building on L Street for its 10th installment.

A venue change wasn’t the only exciting update for the 2011 District Sample Sale. The new accessories pavilion was a great addition. Vendors specializing in accessories were in a separate space from clothing and shoe boutiques, affording shoppers the opportunity to plan their shopping strategy, and a two-level venue allowed for easy browsing. Once again, VIP tickets were a hot commodity; although general admission shoppers were queued at least 50 deep a half hour in advance of the sale start. One shopper said that the chance at the first pick of the merchandise was well worth the additional ticket price. She had already scored some great deals before the VIP hour ended.

The Bargains
Even with the upturn in the economy, shoppers were looking for a bargain. There were lots to be found. Designer dresses for $50 and under, Tory Burch espadrille flats for less than $75, and tops for less than $30. Wink had designer jeans for $50. Premier area purveyors such as Emily Grace, Ginger, Rue14, and Simply Soles sold merchandise for up to 90% off.

A dress bought by one patron was a true steal. She eyed the dress in a boutique a month or so ago. As luck and the fashion goddess would have it, she found the dress at DSS for 70% off of the original price. Statement necklaces from Queen Bee designs were also priced at fantastic discounts.
{Georgetown Cupcakes with a special DSS monogram}
The Extras
A new dress and shoes begs for coiffed hair and expertly-applied makeup. The cosmetics experts from Neiman Marcus staffed the beauty bar and applied the season’s latest colors. The skin care gurus from Kate Somerville dispensed advice and samples of their products. Blow-outs and styling provided by the top notch staff of one 80 Salon gave patrons a fresh look for the evening as well as an opportunity to sit and relax during their shopping marathon.

Power shopping requires power fuel, in the form of cocktails, treats and tunes. There was hearty fare from Ping Pong Dim Sum, Current Sushi, Kababji, and CafĂ© Bonaparte. Svedka Vodka and the Flying Dog Brewery supplied libations and there was sparkling water for those choosing not to imbibe. Tasty treats from Georgetown Cupcake and Dolci Gelati tempted guests. Judging by the crowd, many chose to balance out their low fat sushi with a little cupcake fix. The sounds from 94.7 fresh FM’s Tommy McFly and a great DJ kept shoppers pumped up.

Those willing to gamble a bit could try their hand at the silent auction. Offers for weekend getaways were offered, along with hand made chocolates, wine tastings and gourmet fare. Yoga, Pilates and gym memberships for those wanting to stay fit were available. Fashion and beauty seekers could bid on a DVF clutch, jewerly, and luxury costmetics and dermatology services.

As if the limitless bargains weren’t enough, the host committee gifted VIP patrons with goodie bags containing samples from popchips, one 80 salon, Kate Somerville, Stila, Smatwater, and more.

The Cause
Lest we forget the reason for the sale, proceeds from the event will go to the E. L. Haynes Charter School. The school’s mission is that every E.L. Haynes student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice. Haute committee member Erika Martin-Hughes remarked that it was fun to shop and have the proceeds go to a great cause.

The founders of the event, Real Housewife Mary Amons, Shannon Haley, Liberty Jones, Barbara Martin, and Jayne Sandman, have created a fantastic event for Washingtonians to mix fun and charity. Without their hard work and that of the committee members, the event wouldn’t be possible. Co-founder Barbara Martin said that special thanks go to Shannon Haley, who leads the group in Operations and Logistics, for her efforts this year.

Favorite Things: Cupcake Cuties

Cupcake Cuties - Making Cute Cupcakes Couldn't Be Easier
We'll admit to being hopeless at cake decorating. Four years of workin a bakery, and we can barely manage to write "Happy Birthday" without looking like a four-year-old did it. But when we heard recently about "Cupcake Cuties," we thought ... this is something we could handle. As much as we love our fix of Georgetown Cupcake, Hello Cupcake, Sprinkles, Curbside Cupcake, Crumbs, Baked & Wired and more ... making our own dessert for parties not only appeals to our inner Martha Stewart, it's much more economical.
The easy-to-use kits come ready to decorate up to two dozen cupcakes and provide step-by-step instructions to turn your box mixed blahs into custom creations. Priced at just under $20 a pop, they aren't cheap, but they're still significantly less than buying a dozen or so at your favorite bakery ... and also cheaper on a per-cupcake basis (and more creative) than some of our favorite Williams-Sonoma kits.
Really want to step up your baking habits? Order their Cutie of the Month club. At $18.95 a month, you'll recieve a seasonal delivery of the newest kit. It sounds like the perfect gift for a young mom ... or, you know, someone who bakes a lot.

Say Yum: The Source's New Dim Sum Brunch

The Source by Wolfgang Puck is offering a new brunch option - a Saturday Dim Sum menu, offered each weekend from 12 to 3 PM.

“Since launching our brunch last summer, two things have become clear to us: our guests enjoy a late and leisurely brunch on Saturdays, and they gravitate towards the Asian-inspired items,” said Executive Chef Scott Drewno. “This new menu will allow our guests to enjoy a wide variety of Asian small plates, and with the new format, they will have the opportunity to dine at their own pace.”

What's it going to run you: $30 for five plates or $40 for eight plates. A la carte pricing is listed below.

Dishes: General Tso’s Wings, Chow Fueng Noodles with rock shrimp and Lobster and Shrimp Spring Rolls, bao buns including Sweet roasted bao buns filled with pineapple custard, Duck bao with lacquered duckling and Char Sui bao stuffed with slow-braised veal cheeks. The menu will also feature a variety of dumpling dishes including Szechuan “Dan Dan” dumpling with chicken and peanut sauce, Crystal chive dumpling with King crab and Chinese mustard and Sea scallop Sui Mai with curried lobster emulsion.

Guests seeking more traditional flavors will enjoy The Source’s Maryland Crabcake Benedict, Kobe beef hash with poached egg and potatoes and Maine lobster club with bacon vinaigrette. All dim sum can also be ordered a la carte for $7 a dish.

Cocktails: Expect Pear Bellinis, Pimm’s Cups, Pomegranate Mimosas and three different kinds of Bloody Marys - a Classic Mary with horseradish and olives, a District Mary garnished with a housemade half-smoke and an Old Bay rim, and a Shanghai Mary with chili paste and lime juice. All brunch cocktails are $8 per drink.

Luxe Life: Hermes Festival of Crafts

Hermes Artisans at Work {Via Hermes}

Starting on March 25 at Fairfax Square at Tysons Corner, the Festival will present week-long demonstrations by the masterful craftsmen and artisans from the renowned Hermès workshops in Lyons, France. Opened to the public, you'll have an insider's glimpse into the poetic and visionary techniques of the Hermès craft and the opportunity to meet the Hermès artisans at their workbenches, and experience at firsthand his or her highly-skilled trade such as leather making, silk engraving, jewelry making and many more.

We wouldn't miss it for the world - the fest goes until March 30, so don't miss out! Want to see more? Check out the photo gallery, below:

Friday's Fancies: Prep-tastic

Sorry readers, we are late, late, late to Friday's Fancies today, but never fear, our outfits are here. Want to know what makes us really excited this week? Your one and only Friday's Fancies original, {av}, created a special outfit *just for us* over on our parent site, GalTime.com. Check out the post below:

Want to join in on the Friday's Fancies fun? Create your dream outfit without looking at the pricetag for whatever activity your Friday will hold.

But what's OUR look for the week? We're in Annapolis tonight, visiting the parentals, so we're naturally inspired by the town's preppy-chic appeal. We saw some great outfits in Lilly Pulitzer earlier this week, so ... if the weather were  bit warmer, here's what we'd be donning to head to dinner. We're absolutely in love with local designer's Suzanne Somersall's Kira Kira Jewelry's Sakura line (20% of all proceeds are currently going to Japan relief too) and have been coveting this ring for some time. Paired with a simple pair of wedges and pearls, this look totally meshes with both the upcoming Cherry Blossom festival and our hometown's prep appeal. We've added a cashmere blend scarf in case the weather gets chillier (it always does in March) and love, love love the Kate Spade clutch's adorable pineapple topper. This may be winding its way into our wardrobe come spring.

Need the deets on how to? Many of the Friday's Fancies faithful use Polyvore to create their looks--a super easy website which is also pretty addicting. {Not sure how to use their website? Check out this video to learn more!} And if you aren't graphically inclined, no sweat! Feel free to create your look just using pictures! Make sure to hop over to {long distance loving} to link up! We'll be creating a new Friday's Fancies each week with a member of the GalTime team. If you're a stylish girl in Washington and want to feature your signature weekend look for the next Friday's Fancies, e-mail DC Ambassador McLean Robbins to get on the list. We'll walk you through how to create your look and post it on the site.

Friday's Fancies: Ladies Night

Tonight, Deacon is gearing up for a casual night out with our favorite ladies - dinner and a few cocktails, nothing too fancy. We are totally obsessed with anything red for spring, and, while we'd love to simply live it up in our Lululemon, we know that workout wear isn't out-of-the-house appropriate. So, we'll don the heels (love the studs) and hit the town, or at least Clarendon.

Jetset: Renaissance Arlington Capital View Brings First New Hotel To Crystal City Skyline in 20 Years

Last week, Deacon had the chance to enjoy a sneak peek at the brand-new Renaissance Arlington Capital View hotel and attached Residence Inn by Marriott, the first new hotel to dot the Crystal City skyline in nearly 20 years.

Initially, we weren't very excited - while we always love new hotels, we're generally more into luxury properties. Boy, were we wrong. This hotel is, quite simply, stunning. The lobby boasts 20+ foot ceilings, impressive modern art sculptures, tres chic decor (loads of Assouline books!) and tons and tons of windows that allow natural light to stream in. The color palatte tends towards bright oranges and greens, with tons of texture and "movement," the central decor theme. We wanted to touch everything.

A total techie-hotel, the property eschews a massive front desk in favor of cozy lounge seating, and all of the meeting rooms are completely state-of-the-art with individual controls for heat, lights and AC. Plus, we love that the meeting and party rooms are all above ground, meaning that you'll get tons of natural light (and outdoor space) during your event. Personally, we think this would be an awesome hotel for a wedding.

LEED-certified, the hotel has done everything possible to make it "green" friendly, including a pretty roof garden, which you'd see if you were working out in the hotel's massive gym, which is shared with the Residence Inn. It's got state-of-the-art equipment and a totally funky indoor pool shaped like a martini shaker, and, let's just say ... it's among the nicer hotel gyms you've ever seen. There are also full washer/dryer facilities on-site for longer term guests, plus an outdoor sundeck for lounging.

The in-house restaurant concept is modern Italian, and we can totally see ourselves sipping a glass of wine on the patio during summer months. The patio will be pet-friendly, a Deacon must.

The rooms themselves are spacious, with great views of Crystal Drive and Reagan Airport. We can only imagine the nighttime views as planes land - so pretty. Thankfully, the rooms are also completely soundproof, so you'll enjoy complete peace and quiet. Our favorite part? The top-floor Renaissance lounge, which will offer daily snacks and beverage services, plus huge windows overlooking the airport. We'd totally book one of their Presidential suites, which offers mod, almost 70s-esque decor and ample space for entertaining.

This new property is sure to make waves in the area - we'd totally recommend it to anyone looking for a business property, a home for out-of-town guests, or those who are looking to plan an attractive yet affordable business meeting or wedding. Check out the pics, below!

Luxe Life: Ugg DC Exclusive Patriotic Boot

We know what you're thinking - Uggs aren't ever going to be stylish. We agree, but they have their place (we do don them when it's cold) and we can't help but love their new-ish Georgetown storefront. We couldn't help but want to pass along this amazingly patriotic DC exclusive. Retailing for $800, the crystal-studded boot is only available at the Ugg Georgetown concept store and was created just for the DC market.
What do you think? Can you see Michelle Obama sporting these?
