The first two days of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week haven't brought us much to drool over (although some of the looks at Preen were pretty fabulous), but we have seen a few pieces that caught our eyes.
It's too early to be doing any major trend reporting, although it does look like neutral tones and metallics are strong front runners in color and that plays on fabric, much like this season's draping and ruching craze, are here to stay.
Shorts, especially dressy ones, are also featured prominently.
Behold, however, some of the more interesting looks from days one and two. Images are all courtesy of Getty Images.
Designer Kati Stern rolled out an interesting evening wear collection for Venexiana, the New York-based fashion house that has been showing at Fashion Week since 2004.
This bold black and white gown strikes us as something quite fabulous for a gala event - the volume hits at just the right point to be flattering on a variety of shapes, and we love the trim at the bottom that keeps it from being too Barbie-doll esque.
Ahh, Ports 1961 - we weren't thrilled with your collection overall this season, but some of the looks illustrated what we predict will be a major look for Spring 2010 - new neutrals with soft metallic overlay. This soft dress/vest combo looks wearable already.
Ahh, Yigal Azrouel, one of our favorite under-the-radar fashion houses. Less drapey than collections past, Azrouel played with geometry and shape via a series of innovative cutouts on dresses, shirts and blazers. This dress showed just the right amount of sexy - although we're not sure how we feel about that one half sleeve thing.
Behold Nicholas K, who obviously wanted to continue on the 80s vibe showing up on most of the fashionistas watching the shows from the seats this season. Not sure how we feel about the whole look, but the jacket (and the color) are pretty sweet.
Monarchy, a favorite of the celeb set, is a great go-to for wearable off-the-runway pieces. This dress showed a sexified yet simple silhouette in a color we can't help but covet.
Eric Raisina's collection just may be our new obsession. The African-based designer won an award that allowed him to show his collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and let us say THANK YOU. His bright colors, flowing fabrics and cinched waists are hopefully finding their way into our closet sooner rather than later. Keep tabs on this guy - we predict you'll be hearing lots about him in the future.
BCBG, you never disappoint - if a girl is looking to party, your dresses hardly ever steer us wrong. The collection this season was a bit predictable, but at least we know we'll have some good backups.
Preen wins the award for our favorite show thus far. The "Japanese bondage"-inspired collection showcased silk ropes and miniature bunches of fabric that FabSugar called aneomones. Some of it is wearable, much of it isn't, but we love the way they played with shape and showcased something that looked fresh and new.
