Deacon had the exclusive chance to dine with a small party at Jackson 20 last night, the chic American Tavern in the Hotel Monaco, Alexandria. Entirely too many courses later, we left completely satiated - the chef, Dennis Marron, added additions to our already full selections including crispy shrimp fritters, samplers of the house cooked ribs (so good!) and a selection of southern inspired desserts that made us wish we'd saved room for more.
Having spent four years in the South, Deacon says that he knows a thing or two about good home cookin' - and this, my friends, is it. We could wax poetical about the crispy southern fried chicken, but instead, we'll tell you to go try it. Suggesting the market salad would be a good idea, but the servers will already tell you, with complete sincerity, that it's their favorite on the menu.
Don't think you're headed in for a diet treat - most everything on the menu is fried, dressed or otherwise adorned with calorie-laden goodness, but it's a great occasional splurge.
If you can, ask to sit on the outdoor patio or in the private back courtyard, where you can enjoy the nice weather and peace and quiet.
On a scale of four paws, it's a hearty 2.5.
