Mark Your Calendars: Alexandria Warehouse Sale

Don't miss the annual Alexandria Warehouse Sale, this Saturday at the George Mason Masonic Memorial Temple.

It's a predictably crazy event, with lines out the door and sale-crazed shoppers searching for the very best in area bargains.

Participating stores include: Hysteria, Periwinkle, Mystique Jewelers, Tickled Pink, Treat, Gossypia, Apple Seed, The Little Monogram Shop, Lawrence Miller and Company, Stanton Gallery, Bella and local jewelry designer Queen Bee Designs. This year, home goods merchants Red Barn Mercantile and Christmas Attic will also join the lineup.

Deacon's got a few pointers on scoring the best bargains.

1. Get there early - 8 a.m., if not before. If you're not one of the first in the door, the very best picks will be gone.
2. Bring coffee (for the line) and warm clothes (for the wait, which is inevitably outdoors).
3. Wear layers and slip on/off shoes. Leggings, a tank, and a long-sleeved shirt are perfect pieces for this kind of event. Don't mistake it for a fashion show - you're here to try on clothes, and there are no changing rooms. If you're wasting time with buttons, someone else is scoring that last Nanette Lepore.
4. Don't dilly-dally. This is not the time to browse leisurely. Make a scouting trip earlier in the week, decide the stores that have things you want to purchase, and head straight there.
5. Prefer the basics. This is not the time to score that uber-trendy purple frock, as it's the end of the season and it will sit in your closet collecting dust. Make room for great shoes, simple going-out wear, and of course, cashmere.
6. Do the accessories last. Queen Bee has predictably great stuff, and there are always other accessory shops lining the outdoor corridors. Shop them on the way out, so even if you don't get great clothes, you're at least stylin' in a new necklace or earrings.
7. Head for the shoes. Shoes are always at their cheapest at these events, and there are usually at least a few in each size.
8. Have fun! Make a date for brunch afterwards and bring along your girlfriends. It's a great excuse to get out in Old Town and it's fun to see everyone else's bargains.
