Currently Coveting ... Fendi Chef Grande Tote

Introducing Deacon's latest series, Currently Coveting...
Yes, even a Frugal Fashionista has to have her vices. Sometimes, the Steal just won't do, and the true test of a bargain shopper is one who knows who to mix their luxe with their less in such a way as to camouflage the cheap and accentuate the classic.

Deacon recommends purchasing items like shoes, bags, and jewelery as premium items, while adding in trend pieces with low-cost substitutes. You'll regularly find our great surprises in the Splurge vs. Steal column, but what about those things that just can't be beat? Our gigantic Louis Vuitton bowling bag, for example, or the gotta-have-'em Louboutin pumps? There's no substitute for a pair of fabulous diamond studs, a pearl necklace, or even a tennis bracelet -- but that stellar cocktail ring, adorably accented leggings or backless evening gown can surely come for less.

Without further ado, here's our first Coveting ... of Spring 2009. The new "Chef Grande Tote" from Fendi's spring collection is a Splurge with accents of the Steal - it's made of practical Vinyl material, and large enough to almost function as a weekender or beach bag. The colored pink accent, shown, also comes in purple and our pick, tan, making it an exceptionally versatile choice. Plus, at $820, it's a for-sure Steal compared to many of the other (smaller) bags in the collection debuting at well over a grand. For your logo freaks out there, this is barely more than a single Botkier, Kooba, or even oversized Tory Burch, and far less than a Marni, Tods, Jimmy Choo or (gasp) Chanel.

Whatcha think? Be sure to add your own Currently Coveting ... picks below. Deacon's compiling a list for when he finds a sugar daddy :-)

(Available at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and select Fendi boutiques nationwide)
