Say Yum: Eatwell DC Plans New Venture - The Pig

This spring, DC diners will enjoy more than just a "Farm to Table" restaurant - the forthcoming The Pig will be a "Nose to Tail" restaurant, showcasing Eatwell DC’s own farm in La Plata MD, EatWell Natural Farm, and local pork producers, Dorsey Meats in Woodsboro, MD.

Located in a cozy Logan Circle neighborhood place, the restaurant will evoke the feel of old abattoir.
“The Pig will be a neighborhood priced, neighborhood driven restaurant,” Eatwell’s president David Winer says.  “Our want, goal and desire is serving our neighborhood and surrounding areas with ethically treated and natural products—all local and farm fresh.”

We're excited that the restaurant will feature craft cocktails, American Beers and Wines from eco-conscious producers as well as small batch bourbons.

We'll keep you updated as we get more details!

You're Invited: Type A+ Book Party

Congratulations to Quin Woodward Pu, author of DC-based Little Black Blog and now published author. of Type A+.

The Skinny on her new memoir:
A straight-A Asian-American extrovert from Georgia with a penchant for vodka, designer shoes, and older men—receives her acceptance letter from Johns Hopkins Medical School, she is forced to make a decision between giving up her hard-partying, man-eating ways and continuing her fabulous VIP lifestyle and pursuing a more glitzy and glamorous career.

The book details her transition from MCAT-teaching pre-med free clinic volunteer to directionless, yet fabulous and resourceful, freelance writer. Like many Asian-Americans, she butts heads with her first-generation Chinese father when she strays from his life plan for her to attend a top medical program. She is encouraged by her histrionic but loyal friends—from an undiagnosed alcoholic roommate, to a bohemian BFFL, to a middle-aged playboy dermatologist boyfriend —to follow her champagne-soaked dreams of becoming a journalist.

Located on Georgetown’s upscale M Street, SimplySoles is the perfect venue for the launch of Type A+. Guests will enjoy sumptuous nibbles and effervescent bubbly in one of The District’s largest retail spaces, while a DJ will keep the atmosphere festive and celebratory.

Want to snag a copy for yourself? Type A+ will be available on Amazon.com, as well as all e-book devices such as Kindle, Nook, and the iPad. A full party recap will be available tomorrow on Deacon partner site GalTime.com!

Friday's Fancies: Back to School

It's hard to believe school starts in just a few short weeks! Back to grad school we go - how do you like this Friday's Fancies post of our dream outfit? (Our classes are at night, and we often head out after - so it's a bit dressier than some of you might envision appropriate...)

Our favorite part about this outfit? Our brand new laptop, a Sony Vaio Y series, part of our new partnership with Microsoft. We're "test driving" this computer as a Windows Champion for the next year and think this stylish yet lightweight computer with a six-hour battery life is perfect for taking from class to class without worrying about having to plug in. Plus, it's pink!!  While we're still adjusting to the transition from our Macbook to a PC, the small size makes the computer easy to tuck into our purse when we're blogging or studying on the go.

Say Yum: Martinis and Movies at Redline

What better way to beat the heat on a Monday evening than a martini and a movie? We love Redline, the chic Penn Quarter gastrolounge, and their new promo gives us an even better reason to visit on the weekdays.

There are just two planned movies left, and the Labor Day film will be left for a "viewers choice." Each Monday throughout the summer, Redline has featured a classic movie on all 40 of its flat screen TVs and its 11 foot projection screen, and has offered food and drink specials that reflect and coincide with the film. As summer is nearing an end, the movie and cocktail schedule for the remainder of the promotion has been scheduled, which is as follows:

·         8/22: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; Cocktails: The Dixie Stars, Brick House
·
        8/29: Vertigo; Cocktails: Acrophobia, Madeleine
·
9/5:  Viewers’ choice –Redline will leave ballots out this month for people to vote for their favorite classic movie (the ballot will include 10 options, as well as give people the choice to write-in a movie), and will be tabulated by early next month. People may also vote through Redline’s Twitter page and on Redline’s Facebook page.

During the film, Redline also offers 20% off appetizers and $4.00 draft beers. The movies are shown every Monday night at 7pm. We know where we'll be on the 22nd!

Mark Your Calendars: Jeff From Accounting

If there's one thing we can't get enough of, it's a really great cover band. One of our newest favorites? Jeff From Accounting, a DC-based group that bills themselves as "quite possibly the hardest working cover band in the business." The group plays a variety of rock, alternative and pop from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today.

Composed of members Jake Hall (lead vocals, guitar), Dan Malik (lead guitar), Vince Drader (drums, vocals) and Nick Drader (bass), the young band members make us laugh with their on-stage antics and costumes and keep us on our feet with hits that crowds know, love and want to sing along to. Even better? Wake Forest alumns (go Deacs) and band members Vince and Nick are twins (sorry ladies, Vince is taken) ... so there's double the eye candy.

Check out their Friday night gig at The Blue Banana, voted one of the top ten spots for DC nightlife by DC Modern Luxury magazine. The show starts at 9:30 PM and there's no cover charge.
In the meantime, peruse the current song list (e-mail to suggest additions) and listen to a few 'tunes to get you pumped up.

Friday's Fancies: Gold Standard

When {A} suggested a Maxi theme for this week's Friday's Fancies, we were in heaven. Maxi dresses are our go-to for easy summer style. We instantly knew we wanted to pair a simple black maxi with our newest must-have, one of Prada's calf hair leopard totes from the Fall collections. When you're already wearing a statement dress and big bag, you want to keep the rest of the outfit simple - so we turned to one of our fave designers, Jennifer Meyer, who makes beautiful yet delicate chains and pendants. We happen to love the look of a long charm chain, and have been coveting her paw prints done in diamonds, but the "M" for Deacon writer McLean works just as well. If you were married or had kids, you could easily add your children or partner's initials to the chain. Simple earrings, sparkly but simple flats and a small bangle complete the look.

One of the things we'd like to point out is that the maxi itself has a nice little tie just under the bust. Many of our friends say they can't figure out how to find a maxi that fits their short/tall/pear shaped/busty frame - the key is to pick a dress that cinches at your smallest point and has detailing on what you'd consider your "best feature." Of course, black is always a simple slimmer and elongator too.
