Friday's Fancies: We've Gone Glamping

Where is Deacon this weekend? Glamping in Montana at the ultra-luxe Paws Up resort. Yes, glamping - aka Glamorous Camping. We're roughing it out in Big Sky country, riding horses, clay shooting and enjoying acres upon acres of pristine wilderness ... with the advantages of also having camp butlers, Wi-Fi, luxury bedding, and en-suite bathrooms. Yep, this is camping the way God intended.

As we head to dinner, we'll naturally sport our cowboy boots (we bought this pair last year and love them) and pack our handy camera for any scenic shots we happen to snap along the way. But you've got to step up the fashion quotient on the ranch - so we'll opt for this adorable Marc Jacobs peasant dress as we enjoy our s'mores. What do you think??

Say Yum: Rabbit Opens in Clarendon

If you already own a fro-yo shop and a cupcakery, what's next? A sandwich and salad shop, naturally. The appropriately-named Rabbit opens today in our 'hood of Clarendon (free cupcakes 'til 8!) and will be open daily.

With recipes prepped by consulting Chef Katsuya Fukushima (who worked along José Andrés for fifteen years), the menu will offer both hot and cold items, cocktails and artisanal breads from a local bakery.

The emphasis is on fresh, organic and locally available products.

Owner Aaron Gordon, a D.C. area native, came up with the name for the new restaurant while talking with friends about shopping for salads.  “A friend of mine once asked me how long it had been since a good salad was thought of as ‘rabbit food,’” says Gordon.  “I liked the idea of turning this phrase of slight disdain on its head and decided that “Rabbit” would be the name for my newest venture.  To me, Rabbit incorporates many of the traits of the Slow Food moment…providing the highest quality ingredients, cooking them with finesse and care, and presenting them in a rich, relaxing environment. At Rabbit, our chefs will produce food in a timely manner, while presenting the exact opposite of fast food.”
Standout salads include the Beet Salad, made with fried breaded goat cheese croquettes, orange slices, arugula, pine nuts, pickled beet stems, fresh beets, mixed greens and a citrus vinaigrette; Seasonal Fruit & Prosciutto Salad, made with grilled peach halves (seasonal), sliced prosciutto, ricotta, arugula, toasted hazelnuts, honey drizzle, cracked black pepper and balsamic vinaigrette; Nicoise Salad, made with boiled potatoes, olives, haricots verts, egg, roasted tomato, seared tuna and a lemon vinaigrette, as well as the signature Rabbit Salad made with roasted carrots, shaved carrots, diced carrots, blanched snow peas, peas, mixed greens, pea sprouts, shredded mint leaves, carrot top pesto and topped with citrus dressing.  Prices range from $5.50 for Simple Salads to $10.50 for Chef Crafted Salads.

Handcrafted Sandwiches and Warm Dinner Plates will also be available. Tempting choices include Seared Tuna with roasted red pepper aioli; Vegetable Sandwich with green and red bell peppers, zucchini, tomato, romesco and pineapple; Grilled PB&J, as well as a rotating selection of grilled cheese sandwiches incorporating various artisanal cheeses.  All sandwich plates will include choice of Simple Salad.   Price for the Sandwich Plates and Warm Dinner Plates is $10.50.

Additionally, twelve varieties of signature cupcakes from Red Velvet Cupcakery will also be available at the Clarendon restaurant.  Highlights include Devil’s Food, a rich chocolate buttermilk cake with Valrhona bittersweet chocolate ganache frosting garnished with a 24K gold leaf; Peanut Butter Cup, delicious chocolate buttermilk cake infused with chocolate chips and peanut butter topping and the Southern Belle, the shop’s best-selling and signature red velvet recipe topped with whipped cream cheese frosting.

Luxe Life: Chocolate Sun Organic Sunless Tanning at Nectar Skin Bar

If there's one thing Deacon loves, it's a great spa treatment. This explains our eagerness to get inside the brand new Nectar Skin Bar in Georgetown. This skin-focused haven (in a chic rowhouse on Wisconsin) is the brainchild of two Washingtonians who wanted to bring cutting-edge skincare and never-before-seen-in-DC products to market.

They succeeded, offering luxe lines like Darphin, Farm House Fresh (a Deacon fave), Glam Glow, Priel and DC-based Alchimie Forever. In addition, they have the DC exclusive on treatments like LashDip and Organic Sunless Tanning from Chocolate Sun, plus luxe extras like valet parking and a private back garden for spa-goers to relax post treatment.

Our first taste of the spa came when we sampled the Chocolate Sun treatment. We were lucky enough to get sprayed down by Kimmie herself, the line's owner and founder. Essentially a spray tan (retailing at $55), the treatment started with a simple premise - it would first and foremost be a skin care treatment.

"Most companies that market sunless tanning products are distributors. We opened Chocolate Sun Studio as a research and development facility," said Kimmie.

To begin the treatment, you strip to your skivvies (or less) and wipe down with a mineral oil dampened towel to remove any makeup, oils and lotions that might interfere with the application of the tan. Your therapist will examine your current skin tone and determine how best to tan your skin, before beginning with a light spraying over your entire body. You'll stand in a variety of poses, lifting your arms and turning 360 degrees while your therapist carefully coats your entire body, paying special attention to areas that would naturally see more sun.

The spray is cool, but not cold, and smells pleasant. The room is well ventilated, and Kimmie, my therapist, was chatty and made me feel comfortable. Like your waxer, they're used to seeing naked bodies.

While she sprayed, we chatted about the line, which has studios in West Hollywood and Santa Monica as well as spa services in The Penninsula and Mandarin Oriental hotels in New York, amongst a select few others.

The line has an extensive celebrity following but a strict no talking policy - unless, as Kimmie notes, a celebrity like SATC's Kristen Davis (who used the treatment before filming Couples Retreat) speaks out to the press about how much she likes the line.

Twenty minutes later, my tan was complete, and I already looked darker. The product has a built-in bronzer, so you'll "glow" even as the tan is settling into your skin. Even better? It's got SPF 30, so you're covered until the next time you take a shower. Hard-to-tan areas like the palms and soles of feet had been accurately covered, and there was no telltale orange spotting or distinctive "stop" point - I truly looked like I'd been to the islands for a week.

I headed out into the 90+ degree heat and noticed only minimal color transfer to my clothes, despite the sweat. Instructed not to shower for eight hours and to minimize scruffing, loofah-ing and heavy shaving to maximize the results over the next week, I headed to bed and woke up with only a small smudge on my pillowcase the next morning. The water-soluable solution rinsed right off in the wash, and a small amount of brown was apparent as I showered the next morning. My skin, however, felt great-  moisturized and silky smooth. Tan lines that had existed previously were noticably less apparent, and my entire body was bronzed.

Over the next week, countless friends asked how I looked so tan - they knew I wasn't a sun worshipper. After a week, the tan had faded, but didn't transfer (as Kimmie warned it might) to any of my white clothes, even after I sweat through several intense workouts. It's a treatment I'd highly suggest anyone try. Next up? A booked appointment for LashDip. I can't wait to report the results.

I'm hooked, and will definitely be back for a special occasion - particularly during months when I'm not already looking bronzed.

Deacon was given this treatment free of cost, but his opinions are solely his own.

Say Yum: Bottomless Tequila Brunch at El Centro D.F.

Deacon's favorite Sunday morning activity? Brunch, particularly when it includes bottomless cocktail options. That's why we're super excited for El Centro's new bottomless Tequila brunch, starting on Saturday for $35 per person.

Friday's Fancies: White Hot

Today's Friday's Fancies takes a theme - the Little White Dress. A summer alternative to the LBD, the white dress is perfect for the sticky steamy heat of July and August. Um, and on that note - what's with the heat index of 116 for today? Ridiculous.

We've paired our simple style LWD with a pair of black Kate Spade flats we'd been coveting for weeks (they're now on sale!!). If it's hot enough to warrant a white dress, it's hot enough not to crave heels. We kept the rest of the outfit neutral, allowing the white dress to pop - a simple black clutch that's made its mark in our Fancies before, and Miriam Salat dangling earrings in an unexpected blue color. Our tennis bracelet (always present) ties the outfit together.

Say Yum: Ping Pong Dim Sum Moves into Dupont

After joining the Chinatown community over a year ago,  the team at Ping Pong Dim Sum has announced their second location - Dupont Circle. Opening later this summer, the restaurant will feature the same cuisine but a few changes in decor.

Focusing on the “fun of sharing,” the Dupont Circle restaurant will feature a dim sum bar created especially for groups of friends and an outdoor alfresco dining area that will seat up to 90 people. Open until midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings, diners can enjoy their signature cocktails as well as the Ping Pong After Dark bar menu before hitting the bustling nightlife of Dupont Circle.

“We selected Washington, DC as our flagship city for North America because of the many adventurous urbanites - young people who can appreciate the non-traditional twist we offer to Chinese culture,” said Ian Daly, President and Managing Director, Ping Pong USA. “We knew we wanted a second location in this great city, and Dupont is the perfect spot for us – the neighborhood is full of vibrant and diverse groups of residents, tourists, office workers and students.”

Of course, we'll bring you a full review when it opens! In the meantime, salivate over the pics.

Say Yum: DC Brau and Chinatown Coffee Co. Host Event

Beerfest? At a coffee shop? Say yes - to Chinatown Coffee Co. The shop will host a “Summer Beer Fest” event in celebration of its summer menu of beer on Friday July 22nd from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The event will feature $2 cans of the DC Brau Brewing Company’s Public Ale and a 25% discount on its featured summer beer list.

DC Brau Brewing Company was founded in 2009, and is the first production brewery to be based in the District since 1956. Co-founders Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock have extensive experience in the restaurant and brewing businesses, and have combined their shared knowledge to create a unique beer that DC can call its own.

Other beers that will be featured in Chinatown Coffee Co.’s Summer Beer Fest include Victory’s Golden Monkey of Downingtown, Pa.; Bell’s Oberon Ale of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Great Lakes’ Eliot Ness of Cleveland, Ohio; and Anderson Valley’s Summer Solstice of Boonville, Calif.

Assistant General Manager Josh Croston said, “DC Brau’s Public Ale is a great beer and is by far one of my favorites. The Public Ale is a smooth pale ale with a nice crispness from its abundance of hops. Chinatown Coffee Co. is always looking for local DC businesses to support and I know we are all very excited to offer DC Brau’s Public Ale to our customers at the Summer Beer Fest event.”

Now here's a book event we could get into. Adam Mansbach, author of the New York Times bestseller Go the F*** to Sleep will sign copies of his book at P.J. Clarke's on July 27 from 6-8 pm. RSVP to gotosleep@brandlinkdcrsvp.

You're Invited: Hotel Monaco and Jackson 20 Offer a "Doggie Yoga" Class July 12

Downward dog will take on a new meaning next Tuesday, (July 12) when Old Town's Hotel Monaco, Jackson 20 and Pure Prana Yoga Studio team up to offer a special Doggie Happy Hour Yoga Session at 6pm in the outdoor courtyard. The class is free, will be filled on a first come/first served basis, and is open to the general public.

“Dogs are natural yogis, and love to stretch and move,” said Pure Prana’s Natasha Hennessy. During the 40 minute class, participants will learn essential dog yoga poses and soothing meditation techniques that will calm and relax both humans and their furry companions. All participating ‘dogis’ must be housebroken, socialized and on a non-retractable leash and are asked to bring their own yoga mat and towels. In the event of rain, the class will be postponed.

Hmm. Deacon is social, but we can't blame the other dog if he accidentally thinks that the mini fluff ball is a chew toy.

Before and after the class, relax in the courtyard and enjoy the special offers of Doggie Happy Hour, which runs from 5pm – 8pm. The hotel's Doggie Happy Hour takes place in the outdoor courtyard on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April through October.

We can't wait!

Say Yum: Eataly To Open DC Location As Early As 2012; Brian Voltaggio To Open Similar Market Concept

Flickr via MissMeng

According to an article that ran yesterday in The Huffington Post, famed NYC eatery Eataly is planning to open LA and DC locations as early as 2012.

That's great news for DC foodies who have been enamored of the 40,000+ square foot market and restaurant in midtown Manhattan. According to the article, the new DC iteration will include both the market and restaurant concept, although a location has not yet been named.

The article also mentions that Brian Voltaggio (of Volt & Top Chef fame) will open a 10,000 square foot market with a similar concept, but more local in flavor, with American foods sourced within 200 miles of his Frederick base.

We can't wait!

Friday's Fancies: Happy Fourth!

The long weekend is a laid-back one for the Deacon crew. We're spending the afternoon poolside and then sweeping our hair up and our flats on for a happy hour with friends. We've been in love with this maxi ever since we scored it (on sale!) at Bloomies a few weeks ago. Our go-to style for summer is to make everything uncomplicated and breezy as possible, throwing on a great pair of earrings or stellar set of bangles and calling it a day. No bag? No problem. We'll grab our phone, credit card, and keys and toss them into our go-to Lauren Merkin clutch - the smaller and less obtrusive, the better.

We hope you link up - and have a fabulous long weekend!
