Friday's Fancies: Work Event Chic

It's Friday's Fancies time! Tonight, Deacon is headed to a work dinner with some hotel execs. We're opting for sophisticated, yet fun, and couldn't help but covet the red of this sleek Lela Rose sheath dress. The silver beading at the bottom adds a dose of fun, and it gave us an excuse to go all metallic with our accessories.

And of course, we had to feature Kai, our absolute favorite perfume - this light scent is perfect for summer.

Say Yum: The Jefferson Hosts Next Cocktail Competition ... With Tequila

One of our favorite seasonal cocktail competitions is back! Returning for its third iteration, The Jefferson is hosting their quarterly competition to find the city's top mixologist in its famed Quill bar on July 10. This time, bartenders are mixing drinks with Tequila Ocho Plata Single Estate.

Deacon had the privilege of judging the most recent iteration - a bourbon competition - back in January, and heartily enjoyed this fun event, where bartenders from restaurants like American Ice Co., PX, BOURBON Steak, and Oyamel crafted innovative drinks with The Jefferson Bourbon.

Similiar in format, this time the six mixologists will craft tequila drinks in hopes of winning the grand prize - and a few months of bragging rights.

Tickets are $50 per person, which includes a sample from each competitor’s inspired libation (guests’ votes are tallied with the judges), tastings from Quill’s own signature cocktail menu and an assortment of canapés and cheeses. Reservations can be made here and are very limited, so book now.

Quill will challenge the barkeeps to demonstrate their creativity and talent by crafting an original drink around the carefully constructed tequila spirit. Each bartender will be given 20 minutes to mix their cocktail and present it to the six judges while introducing their respective establishments and answering questions. Judges will score each drink according to a list of criteria including creativity, taste and appearance, with the collective opinion of the guests in attendance serving as the (potentially tie-breaking) seventh vote. The victor will receive a one-night stay at The Jefferson, with dinner for two in the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Plume, a bottle of Tequila Ocho Plata, Resposdao, and Anejo, and dinner for four at Oyamel, considered one of the capital’s finest restaurants for authentic and creative Mexican cuisine.

Friday's Fancies: Work-Cation Overnight

It's finally Friday, and you know what that means ... it's Friday's Fancies time! We're excited as always to play along - even if our evening plans are a bit more on the low-key side. We've been go-go-going for weeks now on a massive assignment for Forbes Travel Guide, in and out of DC's finest luxury hotels. And tonight, we're finally completing our last stay ... and we plan to do our work before staying in, ordering a movie, and perhaps enjoying a fabulous facial mask.

Exciting, hmm? We love the comfort of easy, breezy chemises in the summer heat, and love this sunny yellow robe from Anthropologie. Of course, no outfit is complete without cozy fuzzy slippers and our trusty teddy bear.

Luxe Life: The Bra Whisperer

Yesterday, we were bra whispered. Yes, you heard that right. There's a bra whisperer in town. Intimacy, new to Tysons Corner, is owned by Susan Nethero, aka Oprah's personal bra stylist. We popped into the new shop to check out the merchandise and enjoy a complimentary bra fitting. We were a bit nervous about anyone else handling "the goods," but, since data shows that approximately 85% of the female population is wearing the wrong size bra, we figured it was a good idea to check. Plus, our stock of unmentionables was growing decidedly unattractive due to the fact that we wore the same three pieces over and over and over.

We'd made an appointment online for a complimentary fitting and were greeted warmly when we arrived. While we waited for our "fitter" to return (we were early), we filled out a short survey about our needs. Honestly, we were happy with our general size and fit - just not the way our beat-up bras looked.

Our fitter, Harriet, escorted us back into the dressing room, where she promptly told us to strip. Our bra? Simply to big, she deduced, bringing out a size we hadn't tried since high school in a lacy orange style we immediately tried to say didn't work ... but it fit perfectly. As did the next one, and the next, piling so many bras into one room (with only one bust) that we finally had to separate the piles into "like" "love" and "gotta have right now."

Our band size? Four inches smaller than we suspected. Our cup size? Two sizes larger. Size, it's just a number - right?
One of our beautiful basics
While the bras aren't cheap (prices ranged from $76 to $200 for our choices), we found a variety of styles that worked under tee shirts, with strapless dresses, with convertible backs, and of course, Hanky Pankies (our chosen bottoms) to match all.

While we didn't need it, all bras come with free lifetime alterations, and our fitter advised us that we could bring the pieces in at any time if they stretched.

$350 later, we left with four new bras, three "basics" and one "fun" pick, a "wishlist" of five pieces, and three matching underwear pieces.
Our "fun" pick
We're greatly looking forward to wearing our new intimates ... and our new love affair with Intimacy.

Deacon was invited to visit Intimacy and granted a media discount for our purchases, but all opinions are solely our own.

Thanks to Deacon partner site GalTime (and great writer Brandis Griffith Friedman) for sharing the deets on the newly-opened Virtue Feed And Grain in Old Town.

Say Yum: Concessions Park Debuts at Nationals Park

JDLand.com has a series of fabulous images, including this one.

Move over, Ben's Chili Bowl, there are new concession vendors in your ballpark. Today, National's Park debuts four new food vendors on the just opened Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk. While we're normally not so into baseball, we're very into the new look of this addition to the field, which includes a park-like atmosphere, attractive patio-style furniture, turf "grass" and of course, four great restaurants, including the ever-popular Shake Shack, El Verano Taqueria, Blue Smoke Barbeque and Box Frites, all places we would love to find a hot dog and beer alternative during our mid-game snack break. Not that there's anything wrong with a great hot dog, mind you.

The Scoreboard Walk officially debuts tonight, but early reviews signal that this will be a hugely popular addition to the park. See great coverage from The Washington Post and JDWalk.com for more details.

Luxe Life: Deacon Goes Camping (There's a First Time for Everything)

Welcome to West Virginia. Photo Courtesy of L. Streit.
Yes, we really did it - some of the more hardcore in our party called this "glamping" (but we know that that really, we'll be glamping when we head to Paws Up later this year) but Deacon's pretty darn sure ... he camped. I mean, there was a tent, there was a fire, and we had to trek to find a bathroom.

How did we get into this predicament, you ask? A group of friends planned a tubing trip, and, never one to miss an adventure, we signed on. Until we realized that "signing on" meant spending the night in a tent. Which we hadn't used since we were about eight, and even then, it only got set up in the basement. But that's beside the point.

We headed to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, just about an hour's drive from DC, and planned a full-day of tubing on both flat and white water through River Riders, a reputable tour company whose full day excursions cost about $50, slightly more if you opted for a "deluxe" tube with a headrest or chose to drag along a floating cooler for your beverages (which, naturally, we needed).

After a brief safety video and a quick overview on where we'd be picked up, we piled into good old fashioned school buses for the five-minute jaunt down to the first river.
A lovely view. (photo courtesy of L. Streit)

We came, we saw, we dominated. One of our party kindly brought Jello shots. We piled back into the buses for lunch and part two. We learned the benefit of drinking water and pacing ourselves ... we still had half a day to go.
After a quick break for lunch and yet another safety video (River Riders has a decent, if rather slow, food stand, where you can snag lunch for under $10), we were back on the buses and headed to the second half of the day ... white water tubing. We'd been rafting before, and these rapids weren't quite as impressive, but the current was moving faster, and the river had a number of rather treacherous looking rocks that did a number on some of our friends. Don't try to swim, except in the calmer patches.

Deacon's review? Even for a less than outdoorsy pup, this day was a great way to while away a summer Saturday with friends. But of course ... it wasn't over yet.
Tips For a Day on the River:
  •  Avoid flip flops - try for shoes that have attachable backs (like pool shoes or gasp, Crocs and Tevas).
  • The life jacket or "Personal Flotation Device" (PFD) can handily be used to tie two tubes together on the calmer water.
  • A cooler comes in handy, and, at $8, is well worth the investment. BYO, however - rules technically state that no alcohol may be consumed ... but you'll benefit from purchasing ice and packing away a few cold ones.
  • The first "river" takes only about a half hour - plan to pause strategically to enhance the fun.
  • Three words: Sunscreen. Bug Spray. Bring both. Apply heavily. Reapply at midday.
  • Don't bring anything with you other than a bathing suit, shoes, and hat or glasses ... and of course, your beverages. Leave the rest in the car and you can re-stock, re-group and re-apply at midday.
After the Party ... There's the After Party

Welcome to Brunswick. Sadly, the campground didn't have a large sign.
Instead of driving home, we opted to spend the evening in nearby campground in Brunswick, Maryland at a friendly campsite that thankfully boasted bathrooms, showers and power hookups. The cost? $28 per tent, which we thankfully negotiated to an even lower rate.
Home, sweet home. No men required to help in this assembly. Just my trusty tent mate, Christina.

Deacon assembled our tent. Yes, we'd borrowed one. And rolled out our sleeping bag. And then we inflated our air mattress. Which was totally.worth.bringing. (and no, we weren't the only ones!)
Entrance to the campsite, just beyond the train tracks. If you get stuck behind a train, prepare for a long wait.

We ate hot dogs cooked fireside, roasted marshmallows, and enjoyed the warm night... and, in perhaps one of the stranger circumstances we'd never seen, watched a yellow cab arrive to our site and inquire if anyone had called a cab. Whoa. We've had harder times getting a cab to our metro-centric home in Arlington. After a few hours, we retreated to our tent to slumber soundly ... until about 7 AM.

Eschewing breakfast over an open flame, we re-packed the car and headed into nearby Brunswick to test the fare at Mommer's Diner (although we heard from friends that the notorious El Sloppy Taco was pretty delish the evening before ... it just didn't seem like breakfast food. The quaint small town diner served exactly what our group was seeking - everything from bacon and eggs, cooked to order to pancakes, french toast, biscuits dripping with gravy and ... strangely enough, one chicken fried steak, despite the 8:30 AM arrival on a Sunday morning.

The food arrived promptly, despite our group of nearly 20, and the service was friendly and attentive. If you're expecting fancy, this won't fit the bill, but for $7.25, we enjoyed what we just might dub "the perfect post-camping breakfast."

The best part? We were home again before 11 on Sunday morning, only to shower and discover ... that we'd lost power again. So we "camped" once more - this time in our high rise apartment. Thankfully the power came on late last night.

Deacon's overall assessment? We just might be a more outdoorsy puppy than we thought. But we still think that our next camping trip will be greatly improved by the addition of a butler, bed and Big Sky Country in Montana.

xoxo,
Deacon

Friday's Fancies: Nautical By Nature

Playing along with this week's Nautical Friday's Fancies is easy for an Annapolis native - the town is famous for its sailing and waterfront! While this outfit is a bit dressed up for our weekend activities (tubing and camping, oh my)... we would certainly sport this outfit on the deck of our boat as we tooled around the Annapolis harbor. Pardon this week's lack of layout ... but what do you think of the look?

Be sure to hop over to Long Distance Loving and check out the rest of the outfits as well!

Say Yum: Tackle Box Cleveland Park Opens

Deacon hightailed it to Cleveland Park last night for the opening party celebrating Tackle Box's newest location. We danced to the live reggae band, mingled with friends like Micha Weinblatt (Crooked Monkey), Tommy McFly (FRESH 94.7), Laura Chavez (WUSA) and Kara Manos (Capitol File), sipped delicious lemonade cocktails and noshed on seafood including oysters and grilled lobster. Yum.

This new iteration is twice the size of the original, and offers similarly rustic decor (think old buoys and wooden picnic tables), plus an antique American flag (a massive 15 by 10 feet) dating back to 1908. The massive 48-star flag hangs from the right wall, spanning two floors of the restaurant.

New menu items include the signature New England Lobster Pot improved with a build-your-own option, allowing customers to purchase a variety of steamed seafood in a shellfish pot and a la carte offerings of corn on the cob, red bliss potatoes and drawn butter.

We'll be honest - we took photos, but these images, from Moshe Zusman, are way, way better.

Say Yum: Beer and DC3

What reminds you of summer? Deacon somehow always thinks of hot dogs and beer, and there's no better place to snag a 'dog than at DC-3 restaurant on Capitol Hill. (Although, if we really want a hot dog, we can always just bug our brother Marty, a dachshund...)

The resto is now offering an expanded menu just in time for summer baseball season. In addition to their 15 specialty dogs, they've added beer and soft serve.

“With the start of warmer weather and baseball season, there is nothing that goes with a hot dog more than an ice cold beer,” said Ty Neal, principal partner of the matchbox Food Group. “DC-3 offers a taste of summer for everyone – a full soft serve ice cream bar with a variety of toppings, hand spun cotton candy, hot dogs from all different regions, and now a great start to a growing selection of beer.”

Beginning with two varieties, DC-3 will offer a PBR tall boy, a staple in the matchbox Food Group family, which would pair nicely with any of the hot dog selections, including the Chicago 7 (above) opped with tomato, pickle spears, nuclear green relish, onions, sport peppers, yellow mustard and celery salt.

Also offered will be McSorley’s Irish Black Lager, a unique ale with a malty flavor and caramel sweetness, which would make a great pair with the Cincinnati Coney topped with DC-3’s own house made chili, cheese, onions, and yellow mustard.

Yum.

Luxe Life: Living the Hamptons Life

We've been a bit quieter than usual on the blog lately, mostly due to massive work commitments (check out our tweets (@deacondoesdc) and a number of travel stories that have kept us on the road. So we thought we'd share these great images from our recent trip to Montauk with the family.

Lobster everywhere. We ate far too many lobster rolls.

Adorable villages of Montauk

Being right on the water reminds us of our Annapolis roots

One of our favorite parts about The Hamptons? Dogs are always welcome. Deacon's stamp of approval is noted.

We finally made it to Hamptons staple The Lobster Roll (Lunch) where we sampled the (what else) Lobster roll and famed apple pie. Yum!

The gorgeous sunsets were a highlight of every night.

The super modern creation where we stayed is actually for sale. Check out 57startop

This was our "home office" for the week. Not a bad view, right?
