In Case You Missed It: Bitch Is The New Black Launch Party

File this one under the "books I can't wait to read" category. Last night, Deacon attended the launch party for Helena Andrews' Bitch is the New Black. Not only is that literally the best.title.ever, we were equal parts amused and awed by Andrews' humor and humility - after all, her memoir is being made into a movie by none other than Chandra Rimes (of Grey's Anatomy fame).

The party, held on the roof of hot new furniture store Room & Board, included a gathering of some of the most fashion-forward men and women we've seen out in months. Andrews signed books, mingled among the crowd (in a fab pink, not black, dress) and guests enjoyed wine and Sweet Tea vodka cocktails. Swag bags (everyone's favorite part of the party) included gifts from Skin Beauty Lounge, Georgetown Cupcake, Rolleeze shoes, Lolita glasswear and Huge Lips, Skinny Hips. One of the best we've seen in ages, sweet.

Want the full scoop? K Street Kate captured a great video:

We can't wait for our copy (we ordered from Amazon) to arrive in the mail this week!

In Other News: Deacon Interviews Twilight's Alex Meraz

Deacon and intern Hailey took a break from Wubba time this weekend to sit down with Alex Meraz, “Paul” in the upcoming blockbuster Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight Saga.

Alex, Hailey and Deacon put all paws on the table (terribly rude, we know) to discuss Eclipse, Alex’s sudden rise to fame, his inability to wear a shirt, and all things wolf pack.

We’ve recapped the madhouse that was Nordstrom here, but if you’re a total Twi-hard like us, you likely want more info.

(That's Meraz, at left, with Hailey Robbins)

What was your favorite part of Eclipse, what can the fans look forward to with the newest installment?

Alex: My favorite part to watch was actually when Jacob explains imprinting.  That was my favorite scene to watch because it was so beautifully acted.  I just really saw a huge improvement in the performance of Taylor [Lautner] and Kristen [Stewart].  It really seemed so real to me.  It hurt me to see my brother in pain, you know?  That was my favorite scene to watch…and to film [what] was probably one of my only scenes.  It was one where Jacob’s body gets broken and the wolfpack runs up to him to kind of help him out.  It was wet and rainy that day and I was barefoot and shirtless and we kept slipping.  I [was trying to give] the other guys advice on [how not to fall] I ended up falling myself and rolling in the mud....  The guys and I all had a really good laugh about it.

Did your martial arts training help you out with the physicality of the scenes?

Alex: With falling?  Yeah, I guess so…more with being comfortable in my own skin and being shirtless and everything.  When we train, we are with a bunch of sweaty guys rolling around on mats fighting.  I wasn’t really insecure about any of that stuff.

The wolf pack plays a key role in Eclipse especially. How did you prepare for such a physically demanding role?  You spend the majority of the movies jumping back and forth between Paul the Human and Paul the wolf.  How does it affect your ability to act when your character goes back and forth between human and computer generated wolf?  Does it change your performance?

Alex: No, because I can’t really account for what the computer is doing. I didn’t see any of it until I saw the movie.  Then it was, ‘Wow!’  I just focused on the scenes I had.  You rely on the director to have the bigger picture in mind and guide you through things.

Your character, Paul, is known as the more hot-headed wolf and very anti-vampire.  How did you bring that temper in to Eclipse?

Alex:  The fighting scenes really had nothing to do with my miniature arc in the story.  I just realized from reading the books that [Paul] puts aside all of his pride and he is forced to join forces with the Cullen family, one he doesn’t particularly like.  [They are] his sworn enemy, but we have to fight a new threat and put our pride aside, so you don’t really see as much of his temper.

How has the obsession with Twilight changed your everyday life?

Alex: It has made me act more comfortable in my own skin.  I think when you first do things like this, different personalities emerge.  Some people, they get kind of terrified and feel they have to be something that you are not to keep fans happy.  That was a natural impulse at first for me, but then I realized they just want to see me be me.  They want to see my natural character, how I am, and my personality.  I think that [my personality] has flourished and I now feel really comfortable dealing with fans.

Your wife, Kim, was pretty instrumental in getting you to try out for the role of Paul.

Alex: She is great.  She has been really fantastic about it all, she is a great support system.

And your son, Somak.  Is he into the movies?

Alex: No, he is too young.

I read an interview where you said that a fan was so excited to see you, she actually threw up on you.  How do you handle something like that?

Alex: You know, I don’t know.  I don’t really have a game plan when someone does something.  I don’t even expect anything anymore, so when it happens, it is just ‘Woah!’.  I am in the moment, made sure she was okay.  It was pretty intense, seeing someone react that way.

It has got to be a little bit flattering too, though.

Alex: Yeah, I guess that is when you know you've make it, right?  When someone throws up on you?

The animation of the wolf pack is pretty incredible. Did you get to work with Tippett Studios on the process of creating your wolf?

Alex: I love Phil Tippett.  He is a legend in the industry, and a great, jolly man.  But I did not really have much involvement in the creation of my wolf.  We did this thing called a cyber scan that is like a body Xerox.  They used that to modify our body and form it into this wolf.  I got to take part in that and they [at Tippett] explained a little bit of what they were going to do and how they were going to use it.  I did not see it until I had to do a thing called ADR, when you have to record your voice over the film.   I did the scene where after Bella hits me, I start huffing and puffing.  They had me watching the film, and I didn’t expect them to continue the scene- I was watching it on a big scene with a mic right in front of me on the couch with the Director, Chris Weitz on the other side of me and all of a sudden I POP! And turn into a wolf.  I was stunned when I saw that because I really didn’t expect that.  Just seeing how amazing it looked, it was pretty incredible.  I turned around to Chris [Weitz] and just said, ‘Crap, I’m a WOLF!’  He just looked at me like, Uhh, yeah.

Was the reaction pretty crazy to the screening [Saturday at National Harbor] when you showed up?

Alex: Yes, it is always something different when I go to these events.  All different people, their reactions are always different, but it was great just to be out there and have all these people wait for hours to see me and come together in celebration of something we all care about.

Breaking Dawn will start filming soon.  The wolves are super involved in that, especially with the divide between Jacob [Black] and Sam [Uley] – are you ready to get back to work on the final two parts of the series?

Alex: I just live for the moment, so when we get around to that, I will be ecstatic.  But right now I am talking to you, so I am focused on that first!

Since you have already seen the movie, what do you think about Eclipse?  Are you thrilled with the way it ended wrapping?

Alex: Oh it is the best film ever!

Well, it IS the best book…

Alex: That’s right!  That is what I was just going to say.   I am glad that the fans even agree that the third book is the best.  I told David [Slade, the director] that, and he instantly was like, ‘Well, it IS the best book.’  You have to give it some credit.  He is shy about that, which is great.  [Eclipse] couldn’t be what it was without the two previous films.  They both really laid the groundwork and you see visually how it is captured, and I think it is something that shows why the fans keep coming back and it keeps getting bigger and better.  It is just an amazing film – more excitement, graphics are amazing, a quicker pace, the love story is still there.  It has it all.

In Case You Missed It: Twi-Hards Gather at Nordstrom to meet Alex Meraz

Deacon was on hand last weekend at Nordstrom Montgomery Mall to capture the madness as Twilight fans enjoyed the rare chance for a meet and greet with one of the film’s stars.

AlexMeraz plays Paul, a hot-tempered member of the wolfpack who is best known for phasing (shape shifting) in front of Bella Swan, nearly attacking her in New Moon.   Meraz signed autographs and snapped photos for the doting fans for just over an hour before heading on to his next stop on the whirlwind promotional tour for Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight Saga.

Meraz, in town for a mere two days, spent his trip to the District in a frenzy of Twilight-mania.  Saturday night Meraz appeared at a screening of New Moon on the National Harbor, greeting fans who came out to watch the second of the films, before his appearance on Sunday at the Montgomery Nordstrom, when he took the time out of his busy schedule to talk to Deacon intern Hailey.

Twi-hard fans have often made some strange requests to the film’s stars, and Ali, a 16-year old girl who slept in her car to receive passes to meet Meraz, was no exception.  Ali had only one request for the wolf pack member- she wanted him to sign the orange her mother made her take with her for a snack while camping out for the passes, which once autographed, she planned to place inside a glass collectors baseball case.
Nordstrom’s BP department sponsored the event that allowed 200 Twilight fans from the area the opportunity to take photos with Meraz and receive his autograph.  The 200 lucky VIP passes were given out with a minimum BP purchase.

One lucky fan, Bella, short for Isabella, (at left), came across her pass by accident.  Bella was shopping in BP with her mother when a salesgirl informed her of the event, and Bella knew she had to have passes to meet her favorite character.  Accident or not, Bella was still the first in line the morning of the event, getting to the Nordstrom’s at 5 am for the 11 am event.  Bella proudly displayed a Team Jacob shirt emblazoned with Alex down the side, a touch she added herself the night before the event.

While in line, the 200 fans were able to sample the Luna Twilight makeup line created especially for Eclipse, shop the Eclipse clothing collection created exclusively for Nordstrom BP, and to customize their clothing purchases at a "personalization station" while watched by lifesize cardboard recreations of Edward Cullen, Jacob Black and Bella Swan.

(The overwhelming majority of the young fans in line found themselves supporting Team Jacob when asked, but their mothers all proudly corrected their daughters, proclaiming themselves to be on Team Edward.  Deacon agrees with the mother's assessment ... the barely legal Lautner is a bit of a stretch for even the most skilled cougar.)

Nordstrom BP also offered fans a chance to purchase passes for a special advance screening the day before Eclipse opens Wednesday, June 30 at 12:01 am in the United States.

You're Invited: Beach Bums and Bellinis at the W

Say Yum: Panas Gourmet Empanadas Offers Free Lunch Today!

It's always exciting when a new restaurant opens in our nation's capital, but even more so when they celebrate by giving away FREE FOOD. Today, from 11 AM - 1 PM, Panas, Dupont Circle's latest, is giving away a free empanada to each customer during the lunch hour.

This fave Latin American treat is spiced up (literally) with a gourmet twist at Panas (which takes its name both from the shortening of empanada and and a Latin American slang for buddy or friend).

You'll likely want to take your 'pana' to go, as the 1,100 square foot resto is tiny, boasting only 13 seats. Thankfully, you can load up for very little - the treats are just $2 each. Enjoy the meaty faves like the Chipotle Steak with shredded sirloin steak, onion and chipotle sauce to vegetarian selections like the veggie Popeye with sautéed spinach, onions, raisins and goat cheese. Side salads with a Latin flair are also on the menu – the primavera with red pepper, corn, cilantro and black beans is a favorite as is the jicama salad with lettuce, mango and carrots.

Just go early - we predict a long line!

Luxe Life: Nordstrom Rack Coming to Annapolis

We're excited to post that Deacon's hometown is getting their very first Nordstrom Rack, to arrive at Harbour Center on or around spring 2011. Maybe we're dating ourselves, but we can still remember when the first Nordstrom opened in the Annapolis mall 15 years ago - it was an exciting day!

The 32,000 square foot space is expected to open next to Office Depot (the former Bed, Bath & Beyond location?) and will carry merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com at 50-60% off original prices.

"We've been in Annapolis for over 15 years and we're thrilled about this opportunity to better serve our customers with a Nordstrom Rack," said Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. "We can't wait to open our doors next spring and start helping more customers with our first Annapolis Rack."

We can't quite figure out why they chose this particular location, instead of say, Arundel Mills, which is known as an outlet mall, but we're excited nevertheless. They'll join in good company - the center already includes some of our faves, like South Moon Under, Diva, Matava Shoes, Ann Taylor Loft and of course, grocer The Fresh Market.

More news to come closer to the opening!

Luxe Life: Washington Spa Alliance Formed

Yesterday afternoon, we had the pleasure of taking tea with several of the spa industry's leading minds at the formal introduction of the Washington Spa Alliance, at The Jefferson hotel.

The mission of the organization is is to "act as a knowledge center, connecting spa professionals in the nation's greater capital region. WSPA works to promote the exchange of education and innovation in the field, and to ensure that the highest ideals of spa are met through policy and action."

We listened to a rousing speech by Debra Szekely, founder of the famed Rancho La Puerta and Golden Door Spa, as she motivated audience members to action and shared some of her insights from more than 70 years of experience in the spa industry. “This is a singular time in our nation's history when Washington is looking closely at how our country can be healthier.” She added, “Americans increasingly have turned to spas to learn about the importance of diet and exercise, the benefits of organic plant-based diets, to re-define ideas of beauty and well-being, and to learn techniques of stress-reduction, and preventive medicine.”

Attendees and board members present included Szekely, Mary Bemis of Organic Spa Magazine, Bernard "Bernie" Burt of SpaGoer.com, Laurie Dieter of Glen Ivy Hot Springs, Mary Gendron of Middleton & Gendron, Inc., Mary-Elizabeth "Muffin" Gifford of Island Outpost, and Ada Polla of Alchimie Forever. Media included Stephanie Green of the Huffington Post, Kelly Collis Frederick of City Shop Girl and Kate Michael of K Street Kate.

We look forward to hearing more about the initiatives of this wonderful organization during the coming months and particularly during the iSpa national convention in November, this year taking place in our very own Washington DC at the Gaylord hotel.

Additionally, WSPA will hold an annual symposium as well as ongoing news-maker events, share best practices, and engage in advocacy. WSPA’s First Annual Symposium will be held at the National Press Club on March 24, 2011.

Deacon Says: I Can Drive Now

For those of you who don't believe Deacon travels in style ... here's his latest photo shoot.

Our 1,000th Post! Deacon Says Thank You!

Dear Readers,

As we were scheduling our regular weekly updates today, we noticed that the number of blog articles was at 999 - we were fast approaching our 1,000th post. To be honest, we would love to have planned a great giveaway or a fantastic contest, but, true to this blog's humble beginnings, a simple THANK YOU will have to suffice. DeaconDoesDC was started as the musings of a very curious puppy and a young writer thinking she was *just* starting a graduate school project that would include her mother and father as readers. In under two years, we've seen traffic grow to the thousands per month and have launched a national writing career that has taken us to countries including Mexico, Switzerland and Italy for publications like Robb Report, Luxist, and JuliB and of course, back to our District roots at The Washingtonian, ReMarriage Magazine and DailyCandy.

This very afternoon, we're speaking at a panel discussion on advanced social media techniques at Digital Capital Week, talking to the area's best public relations professionals and writers about how to better leverage your own social media profiles to network and expand one's own professional circles.

The blog continues to grow in traffic each month and we've hired our very first summer intern. We've broken news on DC's reality TV craze, visited a Barbie convention, and tracked the world's best bathrooms with a view. True to our "District and Beyond motto," Deacon Does DC will continue to bring you, our readers, the very latest in fashion, food, fun and beyond.

We welcome your feedback as we move into the next chapter of the blog, and of course invite you to send questions, comments and fan mail (preferably in the form of Wubbas and treats) to Deacon himself at deacondoesdc@gmail.com.

Thanks again for reading!

Love,
Deacon and McLean

Say Yum: Bloody Mary Brunch at Firefly

We're already in love with Hotel Madera's Firefly restaurant (have you had their mac n' cheese? Amazing.) but one of our faves has gotten even hotter with the addition of a new Bloody Mary brunch option to add to their already great $1 Mimosa special. For just $3, you can add a BM to your entree, which includes options like green eggs & ham (spinach, gruyere and ham quiche) and Pop Pop's French Toast (orange and vanilla-dipped challah with apple-raisin compote and maple syrup).

But it gets even better - on Saturday, June 26th, Firefly is including a gratis BM with any brunch entree purchase from 9 AM - 2 PM. If that wasn't a reason to go out to brunch, we don't know what is.

Luxe Life: Welcome Diva To Their New Location!

We've always loved Annapolis boutique Diva, and now they're more convenient to visit than ever. Swing through Harbor Center and visit their new location, just next to the Starbucks and near some of our other fave Annapolis stores like South Moon Under, Matava Shoes, and of course, The Fresh Market. We have a feeling this move will be damaging to our wallets!

Jetset: Kimpton Launches Newest Hotel, Eventi, In Chelsea

If you're a loyal reader, you already know about Deacon's obsession with Kimpton hotels, including the many DC locations. The unique blend of style and quirk appeals to our senses, and the cost (usually quite affordable) is a balm to our often stretched wallets.

That's why we're particularly excited about the opening of Eventi, A Kimpton Hotel, in NYC's North Chelsea neighborhood. After all, writers often have to make jaunts to the Big Apple and one of our editor's offices is conveniently right in Chelsea.

"We are thrilled to bring Eventi to life," says Thomas Mathes, general manager of Eventi. "Eventi brings a new personality to the New York hotel scene and North Chelsea. Jetset: #1 Hotel In U.S. Plans New Locations

We may have spent the past six months jetsetting from one location to the next, but an unlikely spot we've yet to hit is none other than our own Kentucky, home to the 21C Museum Hotel. Voted #1 in the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveler and #6 in the world, this intimate boutique hotel has piqued our interest for both its location and its acclaim. While we've been longtime fans of Kentucky thanks to our interest in horse racing, it's the hotel that will probably spur our first visit.

Today, we learned of 21c's next planned location, in yet another unlikely locale - Bentonville, Arkansas. The estimated $28 million project will be based on the core concept created for the award-winning 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville. The hotel is expected to break ground this fall and open in 2012. Project investors include a Walton family partnership (of WalMart), Bentonville Revitalization, Inc. and 21c Museum Hotels

21c Museum Hotels also are under development in Cincinnati, Ohio and Austin, Texas with plans to develop 15 properties over the next three to five years.

"We created the first hotel in 2006 as much out of our love of the arts and revitalization of downtown Louisville, as we did for a hotel investment," says Steve Wilson, founder and chairman of 21c Museum Hotels. "21c Museum Hotels is about bringing people together with art and each other in new ways," Wilson noted. "We succeed by providing a lively cultural experience for travelers and community residents alike. This hotel will be a creative, educational and civic resource for the people of Northwest Arkansas, as well as add some 160 jobs to the local economy."

Originally, the founders had no plans to expand outside of Louisville. However, the hotel's success both as a hotel and art museum attracted the attention of other civic-minded community leaders around the world who were interested in adding to the existing cultural and arts scene in their hometowns.

"The growth of 21c Museum Hotels is something that has happened organically," says Michael Bonadies, president and CEO. "Our developments will focus on dynamic cities, both large and small, that have a thirst for contemporary cultural, dining and hospitality destinations, and where there is a strong local partner."

"The best days for Bentonville and its downtown are ahead," said Mayor Bob McCaslin. "Today's announcement only increases the excitement that already exists around the future opening of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. This prestigious facility will help complete the transformation of Bentonville into a world renowned destination."

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a new complex in a 100-acre park currently under construction with a permanent collection of American art ranging from the colonial era to contemporary works. The iconic wood and glass building will house galleries, meeting and classroom spaces, and a large auditorium. The Museum will be linked to downtown Bentonville by sculpture and walking trails and will be located approximately a quarter mile from 21c Museum Hotel in downtown Bentonville.

21c will be located on the northeast corner of the Bentonville town square within walking distance of not only Crystal Bridges but also the worldwide headquarters of Walmart. Like the Louisville museum and hotel, it will be woven into the fabric of downtown, welcoming both visitors and members of the community to experience its rotating exhibitions, participate in its programs and enjoy its culinary offerings. With more than 12,000 square feet of exhibition, meeting and event space, 21c will present curated, rotating exhibitions, dynamic installations and live art events. Exhibition space will be open to the public free of charge 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The preliminary plan features a five-story contemporary building with an active street level presence. The hotel will offer a spa, fitness center and other amenities. The hotel also will feature a restaurant that supports sustainable agriculture and serves contemporary cuisine showcasing locally grown and produced ingredients. It also will showcase the 21 Museum Hotel's iconic penguins, created by Cracking Art Group.

Design Architect Deborah Berke & Partners, who created the cutting-edge 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, will collaborate with Little Rock-based firm Polk Stanly Wilcox and Louisville-based co-developer Poe Companies on the 21c Museum Hotel in Bentonville. The property in Bentonville will be designed, constructed, and operated incorporating green practices and using sustainable materials.

We're very interested to see this hotel progress, but not sure we'll visit Bentonville unless it's for an assignment. What are your thoughts?

Jetset: Thompson Hotels Announces London Location

We're a big fan of Thompson Hotels, an elite collection of service and design-driven hotels, and a particular favorite of the DC location (Donovan House). Now, Thompson Hotels is adding a 'cross the pond location to their portfolio with the addition of Belgraves, a Thompson Hotel, scheduled to open in summer 2011.

Tara Bernerd and architectural design by EPR Architects. The 85-room hotel will include an 80-seat signature restaurant, a library bar and a fitness center.

"Our first hotel, 60 Thompson in NY, was ideologically based on the intimacy of British hotels," says Jason Pomeranc, co-owner of Thompson Hotels. "Blending traditional British hospitality with an American bohemian attitude, Belgraves will interpret the Thompson luxury experience in London, joining the on-going creative movement in design, dining and art that is currently forging the "new Britannia".

"Belgraves is iconic for location alone," commented Tara Bernerd, the hotel's interior designer. "We intend on creating a rich, eclectic and tactile design that combines traditional elegance with a modern architectural language."
