Luxe Life: Solmar Resorts "Twitter Trivia"

Perhaps you haven't heard - Deacon loves Cabo. That's why we're super excited for Solmar Hotels & Resorts' latest promo, a "Twitter Trivia" contest that offers the chance to win three-nights in a Junior Suite at Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa, daily breakfast for two, roundtrip airport transportation and a 25% discount on additional nights.

Each day, two trivia questions, specific to the collection of Solmar properties of the destination of Los Cabos, will be posted - once in the morning and once in the afternoon - on Solmar's Twitter page. Followers are encouraged to answer the "Twitter Trivia" question by replying to @SolmarResorts with the answer. The first three followers that answer each question correctly will be announced via Twitter and will be entered into a sweepstakes to win the grand prize package.

Luxe Life: Off & Away Travel Site

Our latest obsession? None other than Off & Away, a new
website where travelers bid to win unbelievable experiences at incredible values.

The concept is simple - each day, auctions on new hotel experiences begin, typically lasting for several hours. Buy "bid packs" ($1 a bid) and you'll gain access to the sales. Each hotel experience is offered without reserve (meaning that prices start at $0). For each "bid" you make, the price goes up by just 25 cents. The catch? Each time someone places a bid, a bit more time (up to 30 seconds) is added to the clock.

You'll have to watch the site like a hawk, but perseverance pays off - a two-night deal on suite at The Pierre, a $40,000 value, went for under $1,000 on the site's first day in business, and a Wynn suite offering went for under $300.

"Travelers dream about staying in amazingly luxurious suites, but for most, these suites are entirely out of reach," said Doug Aley, CEO of Off & Away. "Off & Away is about giving travelers the opportunity to book an experience of a lifetime, experiences that in many cases aren't even available online."

We can't wait to spend more time exploring ... we're off and away to start bidding now!

Mark Your Calendars: Race for the Cure

Want to be involved in charitable giving? Join other DMV locals for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, taking place June 5th on the National Mall.

Last year, the race raised $4.7 million for local education and community outreach programs that work tirelessly to assist vulnerable populations. Some of these organizations include: Whitman-Walker Clinic on 14th Street, Food and Friends, Georgetown University and Sibley Memorial Hospital.

Sign up for the race soon because the deadline for registration and fundraising is coming near. Don’t sleep on this opportunity to be involved.

If you are not able to participate in the race itself, but you’re interested in donating, Deacon’s personal friend K Street Kate is accepting donations.

This is a great opportunity to gather friends and family and contribute to a good cause. You can cross "charitable deeds" off your New Year's Resolution list.

Luxe Life: Uptown Girl VIP Card

If you're a regular Deacon reader, you know that we at DDC are big on saving money and still looking good while doing it. So when the Uptown Girl VIP shopping card came across our inbox, we jumped at the chance to try it out. Our VIP shopping pass should arrive later this week, but we wanted to share the service with you, dear reader, in case you too wanted "in" on the deals.

For $55, you can purchase an unlimited-use VIP card, good for deals across a variety of DC area stores (not just clothing!), including some of our favorite names. For example - the card saves you 10% on all in-store SimplySoles purchases, 25% off all regular-priced items at Fresh of Georgetown, 15% off at Co.Co. Sala, 20% off at the Metro Center location of PR at Partners, and more deals geared towards spa treatments, yoga, image consulting, event planning and more. The card is good for a year (stores may be added during this time) and can only be used by the card-holder (so no sharing!).

The concept sounds like a good one, and we can't wait to see what new stores and services are being added. We'll be following up after the card's launch event on June 8th, so check back soon for our full product review.

In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase a card, visit http://www.uptowngirlvip.com/becomevip.htm.

Luxe Life: Megan Coyle Art

We love discovering new ways to express ourselves, and taking our work (magazines) and our passion (great art) and combining them is just what local artist Megan Coyle does.

Each piece is made entirely from recycled magazines and depicts different figures interacting with the environment around them. By using a technique she calls “painting with paper,” Megan creates colorful collages that reflect an influence from her formal training in painting.

Her work will be shown at the Fisher Gallery in the Schlesinger Arts Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The solo show, titled “Piece by Piece: Figurative Collage,” opens May 14th, 2010 and runs through June 13th. The opening reception is on Saturday, May 22nd from 3:00 to 5:00pm, with an artist talk at 4:00pm.

Come out and support this recent graduate. Who knows, her art may inspire you!

Introducing: Deacon's Summer Intern

Deacon would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest team addition - our summer intern, Andrea Jordan. Naturally, we're a picky bunch, but Ms. Jordan passed our tests with flying colors. We can't wait to have her join our team this summer!

My name is Andrea Jordan and I'm a sophomore at Temple University. I'm a double major in Magazine Journalism and Public Relations. I am originally from Columbus, Ohio, but I love to travel. My previous internship experience includes two parenting magazines, Columbus Parent and MetroKids. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in the journalism world and live in a big city. In my free time I like to play sports, hang out with friends, and browse through chictopia.com, my new obsession. Although I haven't always been interested in fashion, as I've gotten older, I'm beginning to find my niche. I would say my personal style is Boho-chic with a California flare. My style icon is Lauren Conrad. I am so excited to start my summer internship with Deacon Does DC and I can't wait to see what this summer has in store for me!

In Case You Missed It: Geneva Part 1

As you may know, Deacon jetted off to Switzerland last week, the land of mountains, lakes, chocolate and watches for a work and pleasure trip that involved four hotels, approximately 4 pounds of chocolate, and more interviews than we care to count.

We'll be producing a series of posts for a number of sites as well as sharing our travels here. Below, find the first of our published pieces - on the world's first Watch Butler service, courtesy of Luxist.com.
